In this summary of The 100-Year Life, I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.
In the introduction, Lynda and Andrew talk about how with life expectancy increasing we are all likely to live a longer life and how that can be a curse or a gift. They emphasise that in order for it to be a gift people need to prepare and this book is designed to help you prepare.
Then the book is split into 9 chapters that cover the favourites of aspects that need to be considered in relation to having a long life. As you can expect there are chapters on financing, money and working. Lynda and Andrew argue that a longer life means that the traditional three stages of education, work and retirement won’t work for most people and they use Jack, Jimmy and Jane to demonstrate what would need to happen in order for them to be able to build a big enough pension to retire. The financial modelling makes it clear that going forward people will have to change their mentality around work and retirement.
The book also explores the non-financial sides of a longer life. It looks at how people will spend their leisure time, relationships and the intangible assets an individual possesses. In addition, the book presents different scenarios of how a person’s life in the future might look. Through sharing the different scenarios the hope is that you can begin to see for yourself how your life might unfold instead.
The book ends with an Agenda for Change. It is clear the authors are passionate about this topic and they want individuals, employees and governments to wake up and actively make changes that will support everyone living a fulfilling and fruitful longer life.
That’s it! You now have an idea about what you can expect to find inside of The 100-Year Life: Living and Working in an Age of Longevity by Lynda Gratton and Andrew Scott.
