In the introduction, Amy shares how she became interested in mental strength. She was working as a therapist and began to notice that those who made good progress didn’t achieve it based purely on what they did do, but also what they didn’t do.
Amy explains how there are three parts to mental strength: thoughts, feelings and behaviour. They are interrelated. Very often we have a thought and that will directly impact how we feel and how we behave.
The majority of the book is committed to detailing the 13 things strong women don’t do. The concept is introduced and then there is a set of questions for you to ask yourself to gauge yourself to the concept and identify if it is an area you need to work on or not. Amy then explains why we do it, why it’s bad and then what to do instead. The concept is also explored from different angles. Usually, Amy will give explains of how the concept relates to your career, family and social life. Finally, the chapter ends with troubleshooting and common traps to help you avoid them.
At the end of the book, Amy reminds the reader that mental strength is a journey. You need to be constantly working on removing your bad habits and improving your good habits. She then outlines what you can expect to happen as mental strength grows.
