On Monday 2nd August PropelHer’s Book Club discussed Never Split The Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It by Chris Voss with Tahl Raz
In this summary of Never Split the Difference, I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.
Never Split the Difference starts by exploring how negotiating used to be taught and how it is done now. Chris learnt his negotiation skills whilst a FBI hostage negotiator, but the skill of negotiating has been researched and taught for many years. As a result there are a number of techniques and approaches and the first chapters walks you through some of different techniques and approaches.
For each of the following chapters a specific technique is explored. For each technique Chris will provide an example from his experience working with the FBI and then talks about how the technique and how you can use it as an individual.
Chris’ work is far removed from the average type of negotiating an individual will need to do so throughout the book more ‘everyday’ negotiating situations are discussed such as negotiating a salary for a new position or renewing your rental contract.
The book ends with an appendix that shows the reader how to create a negotiation one sheet. The negotiation one-sheet should include five sections and the books details what should be included in each section so you can do the necessary preparation for any negotiation you might face in the future.
That’s it! You now have an idea about what you can expect to find inside of Never Split The Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It by Chris Voss with Tahl Raz.
