HOW TO STAY IN YOUR OWN LANE (AND STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS)

1 – Create a clear vision of the life you want to lead

In order to stay in your lane, you need to be clear on what ‘your lane’ is. If you haven’t already created a clear vision of the life you want to lead then it is easy to see what others are doing and think that is what you want too. If you don’t already have a clear vision of the life you want to lead then I urge you to set aside some time to start creating your vision.

When you are creating your vision you want to ensure that you are considering all different aspects of your life such as finances, work/business, family, friends, hobbies, health and more.

If you don’t know where to start then have a go at completing a wheel of life. This exercise gets you to assess your life from multiple aspects. You can fill the wheel in for where you are right now, but then also imagine what your life would look need to be like in order to rate it a 10. Then use those visuals of your life when you would rate it a 10 as inspiration for your life vision.

You can find out more about the wheel of life here.

2 – Set your goals

Once you’ve got clear (or at least cleareron your life vision you need to set yourself some goalsYour goals are going to help you to stay in your lane because you’ll know what you have decided to focus on at the momentThe fact is that you can’t do everything at the same time and in many cases as some areas of your life thrive others will take a bit of a back seat. Setting goals for the next few months or even years will help you to know what you’ve decided is a current priorityThen when you find yourself comparing yourself to someone else you can ask yourself whether that is something you are prioritising at the moment and if the answer is ‘no’ then you can take that as a reminder to stay in your lane and remind yourself of your goals and what you are committed to achieving at the moment.

3 – Realise that everyone has a different timeline

Sometimes you might find yourself comparing yourself to someone else because they have achieved something you’d like to achieve but they’ve done it already. In this situation, you need to remind yourself that everyone has a different timeline. This can be hard to accept. Seeing someone hit a milestone or achievement that you want when you haven’t got there yet can be massively frustrating. However, every single person on this planet is different and all have different timelines. Remind yourself that your time is coming and that there is nothing wrong with taking more time than someone else.

4 – Reduce the amount you see of other people’s lives

One of the reasons why staying in your lane is harder than ever before, is because with a rise of the internet, and especially social media, you have more access than ever into the lives of people you know and people you don’t know. However, just because you CAN see into their life more doesn’t mean you have to. If you struggle with comparing yourself to other people online then reduce the amount of content you consume of other people’s lives. This might mean spending less time on social media or actively unfollowing people.

5 – Practice gratitude for where you are right now

Sometimes we aren’t exactly where we want to be. It may be that you are comparing yourself to someone else and they’ve achieved something you would love to achieve but you haven’t got there yet. Remind yourself that everyone operates on different timelines and then practice gratitude for where you are right now. When you practice gratitude for the life you are living right now you can truly own your current lane (aka the life you are leading right now). The more your own your lane the easier it will be to stay in it confidently.

That’s it! You now know how to stay in your lane (and stop comparing yourself to others).

With more people sharing increasingly more of their life online it is easy to compare yourself to others (whether it is friends or complete strangers). However, to truly succeed and lead your dream life you need to stay in your lane. You need to not get sidetracked, but keep focused on what you are ultimately trying to achieve.

I hope you’ve found this helpful. In the comments, I’d love to hear anything else you do stay in your lane and stop comparing yourself to others.
