Hyperfocus by Chris Bailey - Book Summary - PropelHer's Book Club

On Monday 3rd June 2024 PropelHer’s Book Club discussed Hyperfocus: How to Work Less to Achieve More by Chris Bailey

In this summary of Hyperfocus: How to Work Less to Achieve More by Chris Bailey I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you to make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.

Hyperfocus is split into two parts and includes (unusually) a Chapter 0 and 0.5.

In Chapter 0 and 0.5 Chris discusses why the topic of focus is important before then sharing 7 tips for being able to better focus on the book. There is no doubt that increasingly people are struggling to finish a book so it was great to see Chris sharing his advice to help ensure the readers that start the book are able to finish, and that they focus enough throughout to take in what they are reading.

Part One of the book explores hyperfocus. This is the mode we want to be in to do great work. This part of the book looks at everything from how we switch off autopilot mode to our attention span. Chris shares 3 main ways that he tracks his own attention as well as the 4 stages of hyperfocus.

A key part of being able to hyperfocus is being able to tame distractions so there is a whole chapter devoted to that before lastly exploring how to spend increasingly more time per day in hyperfocus mode.

Then Part Two of the book explores scatterfocus. Whilst hyperfocus is great we aren’t meant to spend all of our time in it.  There are justified reasons for us to spend time in scatterfocus including helping us to recharge and foster creativity. So in this part of the book Chris wants to show the reader how to actively switch into scatterfocus mode and make the most of it.

This part of the book breaks down the 3 modes within hyperfocus and how we can recharge our attention. A big part of scatterfocus is around coming up with ideas. To improve creativity Chris says we need to concentrate on connecting dots and collecting dots and he gives advice on how to do both things better. Then finally he leaves the reader with some tips to bring everything together in a workable manner.

That’s it! You now have an idea about what you can expect to find inside of Hyperfocus: How to Work Less to Achieve More by Chris Bailey.
