Are you stressed out trying to juggle the demands of work and life? Do you feel overwhelmed with a never ending to do list? Do you resent your job because it is taking up all of your time?
Well you are at the right place as below you will find out how to achieve a better work-life balance.
A number of women who come to me for coaching will contact me when they are frustrated in their current professional situation and they want to make a change. A common theme I have seen is for women with jobs/careers to be frustrated with their work-life balance and as a result, they think the way to achieve a better work/life balance is by starting their own business.
Now whilst a business may allow you have to have more control over your time it doesn’t automatically mean you will achieve the work-life balance you dream of. In fact, many business women I know work even more now than they did when they had a job. Not everyone ends up running a business like Tim Ferris (author of The 4-Hour Work Week).
So here are my top tips whether you are at working for someone else or running a business to help you achieve a better work-life balance.
1 – Define what work-life balance means to you
Work-life balance means different things to different people so as with any goal you need to get clear on what you are trying to achieve.
Do you want to be home by a certain time every night? Do you want to never work evenings? Are you happy to work around the clock if you can work from anywhere? Spend some time and then write down what you would like your version of work- life balance to look like
2 – Create boundaries and stick to them
If you have decided that getting home every night by 7 is important then make sure whoever you work with knows that. Block out your diary and stick to those boundaries. Now I know some people will say that is easier said than done, however, the more you stick to your boundaries the more it will become the norm.
3– Give whatever you are doing your 100%
When you are at work, concentrate and give it your whole attention. Turn as many notifications off your phone and/or computer to minimise distractions. The aim is to be as efficient as possible with the time you have to work. Then, when you are having quality time with your family, friends or yourself then focus on that. If you can turn work emails off do so. Concentrate on being present and given all your all in whatever you are doing. This will help you to enjoy the time outside of work more and remind you why it is so important to stick to those boundaries you have set.
So that is my top 3 tips
- Define what work-life balance means to you
- Create boundaries and stick to them
- Give whatever you are doing 100%
I would love to know in the comments below how you manage to achieve a work-life balance.
