On Monday 4th October PropelHer’s Book Club discussed Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead by Brené Brown.
In this summary of Daring Greatly, I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.
Dr Brené Brown starts Daring Greatly by sharing that the phrase Daring Greatly isn’t something she came up with herself, but a phrase she read in Theodore Roosevelt’s speech “Citizenship in a Republic”. The moment she read the quote she felt it perfect matched her understanding of vulnerability.
Then in the introduction Brené shares her own journey with vulnerability and shares a behind-the-scenes look of the TEDxHouston talk, which made her visible to people around the wrold and has been viewed over 55 million times (As of 2021).
The book then goes on, in a very structured way, to look vulnerability myths and the armory we use to protect ourselves. It also looks at the culture of “never enough” and shame.
The second half of the book is aimed at actively addressing how to bring vulnerability into different situations. Firstly, in Chapter 5, Brené explores the disengagement divide and provides advice on how to close the gap. Then the final two chapters of the book look at how to bring vulnerability into education and work, and then into parenting.
That’s it! You now have an idea about what you can expect to find inside of Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent and Lead by Brené Brown.
