PropelHer's Book Club - Book Summary - Do Hard Things

On Monday 2nd September 2024 PropelHer’s Book Club discussed Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and the Surprising Science of Real Toughness by Steve Magness.

In this summary of Do Hard Things: Why We Get Resilience Wrong and the Surprising Science of Real Toughness. I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you to make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.

Do Hard Things consists of an introduction and then the book is broken down into four sections with each section focusing on a different pillar of toughness. The introduction explores traditional views on toughness and then shares why many have got toughness wrong.

The First Pillar of Toughness: Ditch the Facade, Embrace Reality is broken down into three chapters. This pillar touches on the importance of you being able to accurately access a situation and also what you are capable of, as well as the need to build inner confidence. This part closes with a frank conversation around being tough sometimes means quitting or letting go and that continuing isn’t always a true sign of toughness.

Then in The Second Pillar of Toughness: Listen to Your Body the book explores the difference between feelings and emotions. There is a focus on being able to accurately listen to our bodies whether that be what are feeling or what we are hearing. The idea of people having voices in their head was discussed and then tips for how to listen and control the voices you may be hearing.

The Third Pillar of Toughness: Respond Instead of React talks about the important of keeping your mind steady and the developing the ability to have calm conversation. Techniques are shared to help you to become comfortable in your own head, as well as having the ability with your thinking to zoom in and out as necessary.

Finally there is The Fourth Pillar of Toughness: Transcend Discomfort. This part of the book explores leadership and what leaders need to do. There is a big focus on the role inner drive plays in toughness and why purpose can make all the difference in how tough someone is.
