How To Deal With Negative Feedback

How To Deal With Negative Feedback

Had some negative feedback and not sure how to respond?

Struggling to move forward after receiving negative criticism?

If so, this post is for you as I will be sharing some top tips to help you deal with negative feedback.

Criticism is a vital piece of life. I believe we should be constantly learning and that successful people are great at receiving feedback and then using that information to make themselves even better.

So there is no need to fret about receiving negative criticism. However, I totally appreciate that is can be hard to accept and since accepting the feedback is key to being able to act on it going forward I want you do the following three things.

1- THINK ABOUT WHO GAVE YOU THE FEEDBACK

It is always important to think about who gave you the criticism. Is it someone’s opinion that you value? Could there be an ulterior motive for the criticism? Before you start to take to heart what they have said make sure it is someone you should be listening too.

If it is someone you trust or value then move on to point 2.

If it someone you don’t value, who doesn’t play a major role in your life or someone who you think has an ulterior motive then forget about the feedback and move on.

2 – TAKE AN HONEST LOOK AT YOURSELF

Do you agree with the feedback? It can be difficult for us to admit our weaknesses and take negative criticism, but take a moment to try and be objective. Can you see how what they are saying might be true? Or it might be a negative to them, whereas you see it as a positive?

3 – CREATE AN ACTION PLAN FOR HOW TO ADDRESS

As I said earlier, negative feedback is great information. See this as an opportunity to improve yourself and make yourself an even better person.

Think about all of the things you can do to counter the negative criticism and then plan how you are going to implement those actions.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Negative feedback is difficult to take and I gave you three practical ways to deal with it. One thing I should mention is don’t retaliate. It is easy when you have received criticism, but that isn’t going to help you.

Instead, you should remove yourself from the situation and show that you can take criticism like a mature adult and are strong enough to admit your weaknesses and use feedback to work on them.
