With a new year on the horizon, it is natural to feel optimistic about the potential and I want you to make the most of that optimism. In fact, I want you to have your most successful year yet so keep on reading and find out how you can maximise your chances of having a successful year.
1 – SET GOALS
Success is defined as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose”. Therefore, in order to have a successful year, you need to have first defined your goals for the year.
When it comes to setting goals there are a number of ways of approaching it. If you already set goals then keep using the method of choice. However, if you are new to goal setting, or looking to find a new approach, then check out my post How to set goals using the Be, Do, Have model or How to set goals using the SMART method.
2 – WRITE DOWN WHY EACH GOAL IS IMPORTANT TO YOU
At the time of writing your goals down it can be very evident why your goals are important and the impact it will have on your overall life. However, as the months past it is easy to forget and the struggle can become real. So instead, right now, write down why you have chosen all of your goals. Be really honest with yourself and write down what a difference achieving the goal would mean to you. Then keep this in a safe place for you to refer back too in case times get hard.
3 – SET MILESTONES
Having a successful year requires you keep taking action throughout the year and this can be difficult. One of the major reasons why people don’t achieve their annual goals is because they lose momentum. The goal you set may take months and months to complete so to help you stay motivated it is important to take milestones or mini-goals. Having milestones or mini-goals will allow you to have a sense of achievement whilst you work towards your ultimate goal.
4 – GET ACCOUNTABILITY
A great way to increase your commitment to achieving your goals is through accountability. For most people, the easiest person to let down is themselves and if you don’t share your goal with anyone else it is easy for you to let yourself off the hook.
So find someone (or a few people) who you are comfortable sharing your goals with, will support you fulfilling your goals and most importantly will check in with you to ensure you are taking the required action. This could be a friend, but to really maximise your success and truly be held accountable you might want to look at getting paid accountability via a coach, a mentor or mastermind.
5 – CELEBRATE YOUR WINS
This is possibly the most important step, but so many people miss it out. You should celebrate all of your achievements – big and small! Do not get caught in the trap of setting goals, achieving them and then set more goals. Every time you achieve a goal take a moment to celebrate. Acknowledge all of the work you have done and be proud of following through on your word (so many people don’t do that).
If you are lucky, celebrating achieving your goals will become addictive. Everyone loves celebrating and by rewarding yourself when you achieve your goals you are reminding yourself how great it is to achieve your goals. You will not only have the satisfaction of achieving your goals, but the added bonus of celebrating will mean. In the future, this will mean when you in the process of actively taking action towards your goal you will have the motivation of achieving your goal and the celebration that will come alongside.
