On Monday 6th November 2023 PropelHer’s Book Club discussed How to Own the World: A Plain English Guide to Thinking Globally and Investing Wisely by Andrew Craig

 

In this summary of How to Own the World by Andrew Craig I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you to make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.

How to Own the World is split into 3 main parts:

• Part 1: The big picture: why you should care?
• Part 2: Down to basics: what do you need to know?
• Part 3: How to put your knowledge to good use

 

In Part 1: The big picture: why you should care? Andrew sets the scene for why you should take investing seriously.  He talks about how most people aren’t in a situation where they’ll have decent income on retirement and that most state pension systems are essentially bankrupt. And that combined with inflation means everyone should be taking investing seriously. He shares information about why you can invest yourself, rather than getting a professional, and how there are many reasons why you’ll actually do a better job than a professional. This part of the book closes by sharing two crucial investment themes (the world economy is growing and that real inflation is significantly higher than most people are aware) that then become central to the investment strategies mentioned later in the book.

 

Part 2 does into detail about options you have for investing. This book is written by a British author and talks about options that are very specific to the UK, such as investing in a Stocks and Shares ISA. In this part of the book Andrew talks about properly, pensions, ISA, spread betting, understanding the different asset classes, commodities, funds, shorting, foreign exchange, and do much more. This enables the reader to understand the breadth of options that are available, and a bit more about each option.

 

Then in the final part of the book, Andrew shares his keep it simple – owning the world method. He goes through step by step how you can follow his method. Then for those that want to go further there is a chapter to help you to go beyone the keep it simple method. This part of the book also includes 4 key concepts for investment success and there is a lot of talk about the importance of being consistent and that slow and boring approach is what will be best in the long-term.
