If you have been following PropelHer for a while, you will know that I am a big fan of having a morning routine. If you haven’t already checked out my post on ‘How To Create A Morning Routine To Set Yourself Up For Success’ then check it out here.

When I speak to people about creating a morning routine they usually have 2 excuses: I don’t have enough time or I am not a morning person. I am definitely not a morning person either and I have had to train myself to get up earlier and that is why I decided to create this post.

So here are 3 tips to help you get up earlier and have the time to practice your morning routine.

1 – Be honest with yourself about how many hours of sleep you need in order to wake up feeling fresh and ready to go!

When you are taking to take on the world it is easy to get caught up with all the things you have to do in the day and not leave enough time for sleep. If you want to change your habit and start waking up earlier it is essential that you are getting enough sleep. Therefore, spend some time working out exactly what your ideal sleeping time is. Everyone is different, and I definitely can’t tell you how long you know. What I suggest is for a week or two you keep track of when you went to bed, what time you woke up and make a note of how you felt when waking up. Hopefully, a pattern will emerge and you can decide on what your ideal time is. And if there is no pattern give yourself a bit more time than you think. It is better to give yourself too much time to sleep and wake up before your alarm than not leave enough time and still be tired.

2 – Set an alarm 30 minutes before your designated bedtime.

Once you know how much time you need to set aside for sleep you can set yourself a bedtime. I know this might make you feel like a child again, but prioritising your sleep is important.

Set an alarm that is 30 minutes before you are meant to go to bed. This gives you time to finish whatever you are doing and prepare for bed. Having a nighttime routine can also be helpful to ensure you fall asleep quicker.

3 – Put your alarm outside of the room

By now you have worked out the optimum time to go to bed. You have got into bed in time and now it is time for the magical moment. Your alarm goes off at the time you have decided on and all you want to do is stay in your nice warm bed, BUT your alarm is outside of your room. This means that you have to get out of bed to turn it off. Now for most people getting out of the bed is the hardest part. Once you are up – you are up. Don’t let yourself get back into bed.

And now that you are up you can start your morning routine!

That’s it!

My three tips for learning how to become an early bird: work out how many hours sleep you need, set a reminder to go to bed and put an alarm outside of your room.
