In this summary of Know Your Worth, I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.
In the introduction Anna explains the purpose of the book and that it “is a self-undevelopment book”. She shares how she talked to hundreds of women who were struggling with doing the things they knew they needed to do in order to improve their lives and there was a common theme – low self-esteem. She writes that “We can have all the tools, resources, books, podcasts and techniques we like at our fingertips, but unless we dare to believe we are worthy of the kindness, patience, gentleness and support required both from others and – here’s the challenge – from ourselves, to allow change to occur, we’ll struggle to make it far down that road”. She believes that “Your self-esteem is the foundation upon which all of your decisions are made” and therefore wants to help take you on a journey to build up your confidence.
Then in Chapter 1 Anna makes you really understand the cost of low self-esteem. She walks you through 12 didn’t ways that you ‘pay’ when you have low self-esteem. Next you are asked to challenge the lessons you’ve learnt growing up. Our childhood does impact our self-worth, but Anna makes it clear this isn’t about blaming your parents. Instead it is about acknowledge the beliefs you’ve grown up with and then challenging them.
Next the book begins to look at how you can boost your self-esteem and there are two options: short and sharp boosters, and slow and steady boosters. Then Anna shares how being vulnerable is important for your self-esteem and what being vulnerable really is.
Building self-esteem isn’t going to always be easy and Anna outlines some of the key enemies of self-esteem before talking about how in order to build your self worth you need to look (and probably change) your thoughts and your actions.
It is common for those with low self-esteem to be people pleasers so Anna walks you though how you can stop being a people pleaser. She then also talks about how to claim confidence.
The book ends with three emergency pep talks: feeling guilty, feeling rejected and feeling burnt out.
Anna gives you a lot to think about, but also at the end of each chapter she gives you journal prompts so straight away you can start to think about what you’ve been reading in relation to your life and work out what you need to do next.
That’s it! You now have an idea about what you can expect to find inside of Know Your Worth: How to Build Your Self-Esteem, Grow Confidence and Worry Less About What People Think by Anna Mathur.
