How to be more consistent - PropelHer

Do you struggle with being consistent? Great one week then awful the next? If so, then this post is I explore the power of consistency and share how you can be more consistent in life and work.

Can I ask a personal question? How consistent are you? Recently a 1:1 client was telling me how about how she struggles with being consistent in multiple areas of her life from exercising to diet to business. Instead, she would yo-yo and be great one week and awful the next.

Consistency is frequently spoken about by successful people are a key part of their success. You have probably heard about the idea of needing to practice for 10,000 hours to become a master and how do you achieve that? By being consistency. However, I always associated that idea of being consistent in practice with artists, sports people and tech people. It was only after reading The Compound Effect I really started to appreciate the value that taking consistent action can have on your life. The fact is that success isn’t normally down to one big change, but by doing the right things day in and day out.

So if you are looking to find more consistency in your life here are my top 4 tips:

1 – PLAN AHEAD

Consistency doesn’t just happen. Once you have decided that something is important and needs to be a part of your life then you need to block that in. I advise setting aside a time once a week to look in your diary or calendar and then for each area you have decided to commit to block out the necessary time to do the actions.

2 – DON’T TAKE ON TOO MUCH

A major reason why people yo-yo is because they try and take on too much, which they physically can’t fit into a week, or only at the cost of something else, which will need to be done. That is why you need be honest with yourself. Can you really commit to going to the gym 5 times a week, writing 1,000 every morning for your book and networking 3 evenings a week? Focus on adding just one new element into your life at a time.

3 – BATCHING

Now this tip is most relevant to your consistency at work and will be especially applicable for those who create content. If you want to be a leader of any sort then it is important to have a strong online presence. That could be a specific social network, running a podcast or having a blog. This all takes time. The best thing you can do is to batch content. This is where you make content for an extended period of time (week, fortnight, month). By doing the same activity for an extended period of time you should get into a “groove” and be more efficient. The glory of online is most things can be scheduled so you can set aside the time and get into your groove preparing content and then schedule it to be released over the coming weeks. Then in a few weeks you sit down and do it all over again.

4- FOLLOW A MORNING ROUTINE

If time is an issue then having a morning routine is a great way to be consistent before the demands of life kick in. You can use the time to exercise, journal, meditate, work on a personal project and much more. It is extremely effective time to focus on an area of your life that you struggle to stay consistent with.

I am a big fan of having a morning routine and have created a free resource to help you design and follow your own morning routine. You can grab your free copy of HOW TO CREATE A KILLER MORNING ROUTINE HERE.
