On Monday 5th February 2024 PropelHer’s Book Club discussed Self Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Kristin Neff, PhD.
In this summary of Self Compassion by Kristin Neff, PhD I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you to make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.
Self-Compassion is broken up into five parts:
Part One: Why Self-Compassion?
Part Two: The Core Components of Self Compassion
Part Three: The Benefits of Self-Compassion
Part Four: Self-Compassion in Relation to Others
Part Five: The Joy of Self-Compassion
In Part One: Why Self-Compassion? the reader learns about why embracing self-compassion is so powerful. Dr Kristin shares how “self-compassion provides many of the same benefits as developing high self-esteem without the drawbacks”. She then goes on to share how it is normal, especially in today’s society, to be self-critical and how to start to end your self-critical behaviours and instead show yourself self-compassion.
Now that the reader understands the power of self-compassion, the focuses switches to delving deeper into exactly what self-compassion is. In Part Two: The Core Components of Self-Compassion Dr Kristing shares the three core components of self-compassion, which are self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness. She also shares the blueprint for changing your critical self-talk.
Part Three: The Benefits of Self-Compassion delves even further into the benefits of self-compassion. Readers will learn about how it helps with building emotional resilience, reducing rumination and allows you to feel all of your feelings (which is very important). This part of the book also looks at how self-compassion won’t have a negative impact on your personal development or levels of success (which many people – myself included – think it will).
Some people might think of embracing self-compassion as a selfish thing, however, in Part Four: Self-Compassion in Relation to Others you’ll learn about how self-compassion works in relation to others. Dr Kristin covers how it can impact your relationship both as a parent and a partner.
And then in final part of the book, Part Five: The Joy of Self-Compassion, you’ll learn about positive psychology, optimism and how self-compassion can help you truly celebrate the human experience. There are tasks related to self-appreciation, gratitude and savouring, which will hopefully help you to find more enjoyment in life.
