On Monday 7th October 2024 PropelHer’s Book Club discussed The Confidence Kit: Your Bullsh*t-Free Guide to Owning Your Fear by Caroline Foran. 

 

In this summary of The Confidence Kit: Your Bullsh*t-Free Guide to Owning Your Fear by Caroline Foran. I’ll be briefly summarising the book to help you to make a decision about whether you should buy a copy of the book for yourself.

 

The Confidence Toolkit is split into three parts. Part 1 is ‘Laying the Foundations. Part 2 is ‘The Toolkit’. Part 3 is ‘Final Tools’. 

 

In Part 1: Laying the Foundations Caroline writes about the comfort zone and how that zone relates to the learning zone, panic zone and sh*t zone. She explores what fear is and explains how the aim isn’t to be fearless. There is then a discussion around competence and confidence, and the role courage can play when you aren’t confident. Caroline also writes about self-worth and success, and shares what we should and shouldn’t be measuring our self-worth in relation to before writing about perfectionism, imposter syndrome and the confidence gap. 

 

Then in Part 2: The Toolkit Caroline shares 12 different tools that you can use for confidence. The tools are based on Caroline’s own experience, but many are backed up with research and evidence. For most of the tools in addition to an explanation of the tool there is also an exercise for you to be able to try out. 

 

Part 3:  Final Tool is the shortest part of the book. It looks at what do when you fail and when you succeed. Failing is part of life and learning how to deal with failing in an effective manner is key so Caroline writes about how to do that. And then she moves on to write about what to do when you succeed (and the answer isn’t to dive straight into the next goal without even taking a moment to acknowledge what you’ve achieved). The book then ends on a final note about knowing your limits.
